As a useful assist to personal prayers, litanies address the holy Persons who are their object by a variety of names and titles that reflect their significance to the Faith. When the Persons referred to are the Persons of the Most Holy Trinity, this refers to a pre-Christian practice of referring to both the Most High and His expected Christ by a multitude of titles. So, the prophet Isaiah describes Christ (Isaias 9: 6) as ‘peerless among counsellors, the mighty God, Father of the world to come, the Prince of peace,’ and King David in the psalms (Psalm 17: 3) calls God Almighty ‘my rock-fastness, my stronghold, my rescuer; to God, my hiding-place, I flee for safety; he is my shield, my weapon of deliverance, my refuge.’ Finally, we can mention the one obvious Old Testament litany in the book of Psalms – Psalm 135(136) – by which the people remembered God drawing them from slavery in Egypt and into freedom in the Holy Land.
